Dr. Roehlano M. Briones is a senior research fellow at the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS), where he specializes in agricultural policy and conducts policy-oriented research for the Philippine government. His work spans key areas such as agriculture and natural resources economics, rural development, food security, international trade, and macroeconomic policy. He has authored numerous research papers and co-edited several books, including an edited volume on irrigation policy that received the National Academy of Science and Technology Outstanding Book Award in 2022.
He is actively engaged in policy and development work both locally and internationally. Dr. Briones serves as a Board Member of Brain Trust Inc. and the Philippine Economic Society, and is a fellow of the Foundation for Economic Freedom and Social Weather Stations. He has provided technical assistance to government agencies across Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Indonesia, and Viet Nam, as well as to ASEAN bodies and international donor organizations.
With extensive experience in research leadership, he has served as Principal Investigator and study leader in numerous large-scale socioeconomic studies involving survey design, data analysis, and impact evaluation. His work includes major studies on agricultural development, food systems, rural livelihoods, and public policy reforms. He has also held academic positions as Assistant Professor at Ateneo de Manila University and the University of the Philippines Los Baños, and has taught specialized courses in economics and agriculture.
Dr. Briones obtained his PhD in Economics from the University of the Philippines Diliman and completed postdoctoral research at the WorldFish Center in Malaysia. He is a recipient of multiple recognitions, including the UPLB Outstanding Alumnus for Economics and Public Policy and the Gawad ng Pangulo ng PIDS for his contributions to policy research.
The Philippine Journal of Development (PJD) is a multidisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal published biannually by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS). It serves as a platform for disseminating policy-oriented research on development issues, including the economy, business, public administration, foreign relations, sociology, and political dynamics. The PJD is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License.
