Abstract

This special issue of the Philippine Journal of Development honors Professor Alejandro N. Herrin for his extensive contributions to research and policy in population, social services, and development. The selected studies in this volume reflect the breadth of his influence, covering migration, population dynamics, health care, and social protection. One study examines migration patterns in rural Mindanao, highlighting how life-cycle factors shape location decisions. Another explores the relationship between population growth and income disparities across Philippine provinces, underscoring the potential benefits of demographic transitions. The issue also assesses whether Filipino households' saving behavior aligns with the life-cycle hypothesis and investigates the complex links between poverty, fertility preferences, and family planning practices. Health-related studies include an evaluation of the Philippine Early Childhood Development Project, revealing mixed impacts on child health and development. Another paper compares social health insurance programs for the poor in the Philippines and Vietnam, while a pricing model for health care markets sheds light on how market structures influence medical costs. An analysis of the revised National Health Accounts provides deeper insights into how health funds are utilized.
