Abstract

This issue examines critical economic policies and sectoral challenges shaping the country\'s growth. The volume opens with an assessment of Philippine development planning, questioning whether national economic strategies since 1946 have effectively drawn from growth theories and delivered tangible progress. A study on the domestic shipping industry highlights persistent inefficiencies despite the liberalization and deregulation efforts of the 1990s. The issue addresses inefficiencies in the country’s value-added tax (VAT) system, identifying growing evasion and weak enforcement. By constructing industry benchmarks using national input-output tables, the study proposes a more effective audit mechanism to reduce revenue leakages. Further, an analysis of rice production explores the role of labor, fertilizers, pesticides, and technology in optimizing yields while considering environmental sustainability. Lastly, a study on trade in commercial services examines key determinants of export and import trends, shedding light on the sector’s economic significance.
