Abstract

This issue explores critical economic and policy challenges shaping agriculture, trade, environment, and development in the Philippines and beyond. One study examines why farmers may hesitate to adopt new technologies despite clear profit advantages, emphasizing the role of social capital and network structures in agricultural decision-making. Another assesses the welfare effects of rice trade policy reforms, finding that removing quantitative restrictions and reducing tariffs could yield the highest long-term benefits for households. Environmental sustainability is also a pressing concern, with land degradation posing serious threats to agricultural productivity. A review of soil conservation strategies underscores the need for stronger incentives and tenure reforms to promote sustainable land use. A study on population and economic development in the Philippines presents evidence supporting the theory that economic growth fuels population expansion, highlighting complex policy implications. An analysis of Indonesia’s manufacturing sector reveals increasing regional specialization and industrial concentration in Java from 1998 to 2007, shedding light on broader trends in industrial development. With insights spanning agriculture, trade, environment, and industrial growth, this issue offers valuable perspectives for policymakers, researchers, and development practitioners.
