Abstract
This issue explores critical economic and financial concerns affecting the Philippines. The studies presented offer data-driven insights that contribute to a deeper understanding of smuggling, food security measurement, offshore banking, monetary control, and foreign participation in agriculture. One study estimates the extent of import smuggling by analyzing Philippine trade data and developing a microeconomic model to explain the factors influencing traders’ decisions to engage in illicit trade. Another article examines food security policies, arguing that while these policies are frequently formulated, there is a lack of regular and systematic measurement of food insecurity. The financial sector is also a focus, with an article providing a background on offshore banking units in the Philippines, discussing their operations, regulatory environment, and impact on domestic banking technology. Another study evaluates the effectiveness of monetary policy, emphasizing the need for transparency in central banking goals, especially in the presence of conflicting policy measures. Lastly, an article investigates foreign participation in Philippine agriculture, assessing direct and indirect involvement.
