Abstract

This issue presents a collection of studies, including one from the Workshop on Methods for Agricultural Policy Analysis held at the University of the Philippines Los Baños on August 13–14, 1985. The articles provide critical insights into agricultural productivity, policy modeling, market transitions, and econometric challenges in agricultural research. Several articles focus on agricultural productivity, with one study analyzing regional disparities in productivity from 1949 to 1984 and raising key concerns for further research. Another examines technological biases in agriculture, revealing a strong preference for fertilizer and tractor use while highlighting labor-related constraints. An article on econometric issues in production analysis explores model selection, panel data use, and nonrandom sampling biases, essential considerations for accurate agricultural policy evaluation. The issue delves into consumer theory and demand systems, reviewing Philippine household-level estimates and their relevance to nutrition policy simulations. A study on nonmarket-to-market transitions develops a framework for understanding how rural households shift between subsistence and commercial production. Another article models supervision’s role in labor transactions, providing insights into labor dynamics in agricultural settings. Studies discussing general equilibrium models and their application to agricultural policy analysis are also included. One article explores a simple general equilibrium model applied to Indian agriculture, emphasizing the impact of population growth on labor supply and food demand. Another describes a computable general equilibrium model, detailing modifications made to enhance its applicability to agricultural policy.
