Abstract

This issue presents analyses of economic challenges in developing countries, covering financial management, taxation, trade, and education. A review of developing economies’ financial positions offers macroeconomic policy recommendations, while another study examines small LDC bankers’ profit-maximizing decisions and their implications for policy reforms. Taxation remains a critical concern, with studies evaluating the interaction between indirect taxes and tariffs, and proposing alternative tax structures to improve efficiency and equity in the Philippines. Trade and investment dynamics are explored through an analysis of ASEAN Preferential Trading Arrangements and their impact on regional economic interdependence. A study on firm location decisions in the Philippines identifies key factors influencing investment choices, noting that direct government intervention plays a limited role. Beyond finance and trade, this issue highlights challenges in the education sector, particularly its struggle to meet the demands of a technologically evolving workforce. Discussions include government involvement, human capital investments, and tuition policies. An assessment of economic crises and adjustment policies examines their effects on vulnerable income groups, proposing strategies for sustainable development.
