Abstract

This issue presents a set of studies examining key economic sectors and policy frameworks in the Philippines. One paper provides an in-depth look at the country’s official corn statistics, detailing the estimation procedures for area, production, and yield. It compares official estimates with independent sources, shedding light on data accuracy and reliability. Another study contrasts the Philippine and Thai textile industries, highlighting the differences in output, export performance, and total factor productivity (TFP) growth, with Thailand demonstrating stronger industry development. Market structures and consumer welfare are also explored in an analysis suggesting that past welfare losses were disproportionately borne by consumers. A paper discusses the state of Philippine health research, emphasizing the need for improved research management, coordination, and utilization, particularly in developing countries. Lastly, a discussion on monetary policy frameworks evaluates the effectiveness of various central bank instruments.
