Abstract
This issue explores the economic and environmental challenges facing the Philippines, covering trade liberalization, sustainable forestry, poverty assessment, and microfinance. One study examines the potential impact of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) on the Philippine economy. Using the APEX computable general equilibrium model, it simulates changes in tariff structures, trade expansion, and price adjustments to assess their effects on macroeconomic performance and income distribution. Another article evaluates the efficiency of the Community-Based Forest Management Program (CBFM) and Industrial Forest Management Agreements (IFMA). A comparative study on poverty measurement in the Philippines and Indonesia highlights inconsistencies in official statistics that hinder cross-country comparisons. Finally, an analysis of the Landless People’s Development Fund—a local adaptation of the Grameen Bank model—assesses its financial viability.
