Abstract

This issue examines critical economic and policy challenges shaping the Philippines, focusing on financial sector reforms, foreign direct investment (FDI), population growth, environmental governance, and food security. One study reviews the country’s financial sector developments over the past 15 years, emphasizing the need for stronger prudential regulation amid increasing international financial integration. Another paper analyzes FDI trends, evaluating the effectiveness of investment incentives, particularly in export processing and special economic zones, in improving the country’s competitiveness. Population growth remains a pressing concern, and a study in this issue explores its primary drivers—unwanted fertility, high desired family size, and population momentum. It underscores the importance of diverse policy approaches, including government-supported family planning programs, in managing demographic trends. Meanwhile, the devolution of environmental responsibilities under the 1991 Local Government Code has led to innovative urban sustainability initiatives. A study highlights successful local government programs that address environmental challenges. Lastly, this issue features an analysis of food demand and nutrition, using a general equilibrium model to assess how macroeconomic policies, such as tariff reforms, influence household nutrition.
